Oviedo

Located in northern Spain, Oviedo is the capital city of the Asturias Region, and has a population of approximately 200,000. The coast is a mere 28 kilometres away from Oviedo and the breath-taking Cantabrian mountains can be reached in an hour.

With no less than 12 national monuments and a world heritage site to its name, Oviedo offers even the most tireless visitor plenty to see and do. Among the must-sees are the Cathedral, the university, several medieval churches, palaces … the list goes on! There are so many places of interest, too numerous to mention, that you’ll just have to come and see them for yourself!

As in the rest of Asturias, traditional local dishes are delicious. Fabada (a bean stew with black and white pudding and spicy sausage) is Oviedo’s best-known dish, but there are numerous fish and meat dishes, all produced with wonderful local produce, which make Oviedo a must for foodies. Also, the cider here is superb.

Transport to and around Oviedo is excellent with an international airport serving Asturias in Oviedo itself, and excellent rail and road connections with the rest of northern and central Spain.

Rented accommodation is fairly easy to find in the city. A 25 hour teaching salary is sufficient to rent a small flat. However, being a university city, there are also many opportunities for flat sharing available.
